How Big Is a 20 Yard Dumpster Same Footprint, Taller Walls

A 20-yard dumpster holds twenty cubic yards, or 540 cubic feet, and one Pensacola hauler lists it at 14 feet long, 8 feet wide and 6 feet tall on the outside. That works out to roughly eight pickup-truck loads of debris in a box that needs no more driveway than a 10-yard; it is simply taller.

Same footprint, more height

The surprising thing about the 20-yard box is that it is not longer or wider than the small ones. The same Pensacola price list gives the 10-yard as 8 feet wide, 4 feet tall and 14 feet long, the 15-yard as 8 by 5 by 14, and the 20-yard as 8 by 6 by 14. Only the walls change. A driveway that can take the smallest box can usually take the 20, and the trade-off is the height you have to lift debris over: about six feet, which is chest height or higher for most adults.

The figures are outside dimensions, and other haulers build their boxes a little differently, so ask for the measurements when booking if the driveway is tight.

How much fits

By the same hauler's comparisons, a 20-yard box holds about eight pickup-truck loads, or roughly twenty washing machines' worth of bulk. In Pensacola terms that is:

  • the gutted contents of one or two rooms after a storm, with soaked drywall, carpet and pad;
  • a mid-size remodel, such as a kitchen with its cabinets and flooring;
  • a full garage and attic clear-out;
  • the roofing from a modest house, if the material is light enough to stay under the weight limit.

It is the usual size for a gutted room after a storm, because soaked contents fill a smaller box before the job is half done. The storm debris dumpster rental page goes into that work.

Weight is the real ceiling

Size tells you how much space there is, not how much weight the rental includes. One Pensacola list includes two tons on its 20-yard box. Past that, overage is billed by the ton, and the county's Perdido Landfill gate rate of $45.06 a ton for solid waste is the floor under that charge. A 20-yard box of soaked carpet and drywall gets heavy much faster than the same box of dry furniture, and a box of roofing shingles can reach the limit while the walls still show plenty of space. For shingles, see roof tear-off dumpster rental; for concrete, a smaller box is the better fit, because Perdido takes clean concrete with no rebar or wire at no fee as long as it stays unmixed.

Rental time after Isaias

Hurricane Isaias reached the coast near Destin on 9 October 2026 and blew the roof off a hotel in Pensacola. The city estimated its own cleanup at $16 million and expected the first collection pass to take four to five weeks. Demand for boxes moves with that: one Pensacola hauler has temporarily cut its standard seven-day rental to up to three days while storm work lasts. Ask how many days come with the box before planning a slow weekend-by-weekend fill.

What the city adds to every pull

Inside city limits, a hauler needs a franchise from the City of Pensacola and pays the city $1.50 per cubic yard of container capacity every time a container is collected. On a 20-yard box that is $30 per pull, built into what the hauler charges. For comparison, the Emerald Coast Utilities Authority's commercial roll-off schedule lists $197.04 per pull on a 20-yard box, plus delivery and disposal by weight, which shows how many parts sit behind a single headline price.

Is 20 yards the right size?

For one to three rooms of debris or a mid-size remodel, usually. A whole-house gut or a long build may need a larger box or several swaps; see construction and renovation dumpster rental. For a house full of belongings rather than building materials, home cleanout dumpster rental covers sizing. Current 20-yard rates in the Pensacola area are on the pricing page.
